Back Light in Photoshop?

You know how in movie posters, the main actor/object is always back lit? With a frame or outline of light? Well, I’m making a poster for the fall theater production in school, and I really want to do that-except I don’t know how and the dodge tool alone doesn’t seem to cut it. For the last two days I’ve been looking everywhere online for some sort of tutorial, but while there are thousands for digital painting/cell shading/shadows-there are zero for back lighting.
I am using an Istock photo (guy in a black shirt, you don’t see his face, and his back is towards you)on a dark background in photoshop, if that bit of info helps.
